Japan’s Emergency Grant Aid
Media Briefing at the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development
On Friday, 12th August 2016, His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka presided over a press briefing, when the Government of Japan provided an Emergency Grant Aid amounting to USD 1.85 million as part of humanitarian aid to the Government of Malawi through WFP. The press briefing was graced by Honourable Goodall Gondwe, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, and the WFP Country Representative Ms. Coco Ushiyama.
In his remarks Ambassador Nishioka mentioned about declaration of a state of national disaster due to El Nino on 12th April 2016 and the launch of the 2016/17 Food Insecurity Response Plan on 13th July 2016 by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. In response to a call for support by the Government of Malawi, Government of Japan swiftly took action to provide Emergency Grant Aid for humanitarian assistance, in addition to the support under the Japanese Supplementary Budget. He also encouraged the collaboration between WFP and JICA to enhance “Humanitarian assistance and Development” in agreeing to a common goal that will help eliminate hunger and malnutrition.
The Government of Japan has provided grant of USD 1.85 million to allow WFP and its partners to help provide food assistance and meet immediate humanitarian food needs to some of the vulnerable Malawians whilst supporting a transition towards recovery and greater resilience.
