Malawi particularly the Southern region has affected by the widespread drought as a result of El Nino in 2015/16 growing season, enduring its second straight year effects following the January 2015 floods and prolonged dry spell. The May 2016 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) Report indicates that, 6.5 million Malawians across 24 of the 28 districts will experience acute food insecurity during the 2016/17 lean season representing 39 percent of the country’s estimated population.

In his remarks Ambassador Nishioka mentioned about declaration of a state of national disaster due to El Nino on 12th April 2016 and the launch of the 2016/17 Food Insecurity Response Plan on 13th July 2016 by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. In response to a call for support by the Government of Malawi, Government of Japan swiftly took action to provide Emergency Grant Aid for humanitarian assistance, in addition to the support under the Japanese Supplementary Budget. He also encouraged the collaboration between WFP and JICA to enhance “Humanitarian assistance and Development” in agreeing to a common goal that will help eliminate hunger and malnutrition.

The Government of Japan has provided grant of USD 1.85 million to allow WFP and its partners to help provide food assistance and meet immediate humanitarian food needs to some of the vulnerable Malawians whilst supporting a transition towards recovery and greater resilience.
